On the 15th October 1997, Andy Green drove the jet powered ThrustSSC to a new land speed record of 763mph.
The microlights were used to assist with the track security and gave the final "all clear" before the car was allowed to run. Each plane covered a seven mile section of the track (either North or South) and found objects as diverse as a lame coyote, a flock of turkeys and a lone camper in his mobile home camping overnight. A well controlled security system was in place with only six manned access points onto the desert. Cooperation between the two teams, that is ThrustSSC and the Spirit of America also included sharing manpower. Some assistance was also given by the Thrust boys when the HGV carrying "Spirit" away to California for running repairs, missed the desert exit point at midnight and became hopelessly stuck in the mud.
The Sales Manager of Pegasus Aviation, Mr John Fack, spent three weeks in the Nevada desert setting up the aviation side of the project and for a report on his experiences, please read the next page.
